This blog is about KeyWords but first some background.
Background - What is web marketing ROI?
It is natural for companies to want to get more sales and reduce their marketing costs, especially when times are tough. Is it possible to achieve both objectives? From my experience, it is. But, just doing 'advertising' & 'marketing' activities is no guarantee of success. Some companies waste thousands (and even millions) of pounds being busy fools. Others get great results for relatively low spends. Marketing ROI (Return On Investment) is all about getting more for less.
This is one of a series of web marketing tips designed to improve Web Marketing Return On Investment (ROI). The tips are based on over 20 years experience of helping small companies as well as some of Britain's best brands to transform their Marketing ROI
The tips will cover areas like Pay Per Click advertising, email marketing, web metrics analysis, brand thought and customer lifetime value. This blog covers KeyWords.
What are KeyWords?
KeyWords are words or phrases that help search engines index your website. If you want to attract prospects to a specific page on your website you need to know which words they are likely to type into a search engine like Google. Once known, it is possible to implement various strategies including search engine optimisation, blogs, podcasts etc to improve your web page ranking for that search term.
How can KeyWord strategies cost effectively deliver more sales?
KeyWord strategies are designed to enhance your Google ranking with the key objective of achieving a page 1 listing on Google for your chosen keyword(s). If done properly, this should result in extra visits to your website and more sales.
The other key benefit is that once the keyword strategies have been implemented, this additional traffic from natural search comes at 'zero' cost. Given that there are only 10 slots and your competitors should also be striving to achieve a Google page 1 listing, you will need to review progress on a regular basis.
Does it work?
If done properly yes, but the first requirement for success is the selection of the best keywords: which are:-
- highly relevant to your web page content
- have relatively high search volumes (high demand)
- have relatively low competition (low supply)
- reinforce your brand thought
There are tools available that can help with the first 3 points above. The 4th requires input from an experienced marketer.
Most companies do not do any work to enhance their natural search rankings. Some take their existing content and do a small amount of search engine optimisation. However, the best results come from choosing the best KeyWords for your business in the first place, then making sure that your content uses these KeyWords to best effect.
Some companies focus so much on trying to 'trick' the search engines to get a high ranking but fail to ensure that their content works well for target prospects / customers once they land on the website. This is pointless if your objective is to convert web visitors to genuine leads or customers or repeat customers.
How do you develop successful KeyWord strategies?
You need to commit time and some budget (but not a lot compared to the value delivered). Many companies (big and small) find they don't have the time or expertise to do this themselves to a high enough standard and use a keyword specialist.
However, please take care in selecting the right partner. Some are so keen to get a high ranking that they resort to unethical ways to achieve this. At best, this will only provide a short term improvement (if any) with a risk that your website may be blacklisted by Google, which would be no small issue.
A KeyWord strategy plays a crucial role if you want to significantly improve your web marketing ROI.
